Dear (Elected Official Name)
I am one of your voting constituents and a supporter of the Whittemore Peterson Institute's (WPI) efforts to find a cure for neuro-immune diseases. I feel that it is important to educate you about the necessity for funding research for patients with illnesses that are caused by acquired dysregulation of both the immune system and the nervous system, often resulting in life long disease and disability. Neuro-immune disease (NID) affects people with myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, autism, and Gulf War illness. Millions of people worldwide are impacted by these chronic and debilitating diseases. Research into these diseases is severely underfunded, and we need your help now more than ever to further the important work necessary to help find treatments and a cure.
The WPI is a translational medical research institute located on the medical school campus of the University of Nevada, Reno. The Center for Translational Medicine, within the WPI, is a medical clinic which opened in August of 2011, and is accepting new patients with neuro-immune diseases. Although clinical research is ongoing at the WPI and other institutions around the country, there is far too little support of these efforts. Thus, the WPI fills a critical national health care void by serving patients who have too few doctors and no effective treatment options.
Developed to serve those suffering from neuro-immune diseases, the WPI has created an active, working relationship between its research team and clinical experts at the institute and around the world. With added financial support, the WPI can continue to provide answers to both patients and their physicians. As the WPI’s research is translated from the benches of its basic researchers and collaborators to the medical world, it will change the lives of millions by creating revealing diagnostics and novel treatments, through vigorous scientific discovery.
I hope you can see why the work of the WPI and other researchers in this field is so important to my family and to me. Your support of federal research dollars for biological research into the causes of these diseases and for clinical Centers of Excellence can bring new hope to millions of people who are waiting for treatments and a cure.
